By Air
Haikou Meilan Airport, 25 km (16 miles) away from the center of Haikou, provides a convenient connection between Haikou and other cities at home and abroad. It has more than 200 air lines flying between major cities inside China such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shijiazhuang, Wuhan, Dalian, Xiamen, Xian, Chengdu, Harbin, Qingdao and Nanjing, etc., as well as direct flights to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and so forth. Haikou Meilan Airport (HMA) is 30 minutes ride from downtown by bus. A shuttle bus operates between the airport and downtown Haikou. It begins at 5: 30 each morning and runs until the last flight of the day. The bus fare is RMB 15 per person. China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines provide a free bus to the airport. The former starts at the gate of Civil Aviation Hotel on Haixiu Road while the latter starts at the building of the old airport. If you take a taxi to the airport, the fare is about RMB 30 - 40 after a bargain with the driver.
From HMA to Sanya City:
1.Hire a taxi at the price of RMB 300 - 400
2.Take a taxi to Haikou East Bus Station with RMB 50 -70, and then take the coach to Sanya with the price of RMB 79. Arriving at the Sanya Bus Station, it costs about RMB 50 to Yalong Bay, RMB 10 to Dadonghai and RMB 7 to downtown Sanya by taxi. Taxi fares are a little bit more expensive at night.
3.Take the shuttle bus from HMA to Haikou East Bus Station with a price of RMB 15. On arrival, take a minibus to Sanya which will cost RMB 30 -50, this bus makes frequent stops on its journey.
By Train
A rail passenger service was established on December 5, 2004 that runs between Haikou and Guangzhou. The train travels on the boat and is the first Chinese rail connection that spans the sea. The crossing takes approximately 55 minutes. The entire one way journey takes about 12 hours. Tickets price vary from RMB 138 to RMB 400.
You can buy railway tickets at Haikou New Port (Xin Gang) Ticket Office (transferring at Guangzhou) and at Xiuying Port Ticket Office (transferring at Zhanjiang).
Note: during the period of colder weather from December to the following February and in the typhoon season during July and August, you may find that it is not possible to travel off the island. By Bus
Haikou is the highway hub of the Hainan Island. National highways at the east, middle line and west as well as the expressway circle the island and are of great convenience to transport. Haikou East Bus Station is the largest coach station in the Province, and is located between Haikou and Qiongshan. Buses here are mainly bound for cities and counties along the east national highway. It takes about 3 hours to go along the east national highway, but 4 hours along the west from Haikou to Sanya. Buses from the West Bus Station are mainly bound for Danzhou, Baisha, Changjiang, Dongfang, Lingao, Ledong, Tongshi and Tunchang. The North Bus Station has buses heading for neighboring counties like Chengmai, Dingan and so on.

By Sea
Haikou has New Port (Xin Guang) and Xiuying Port. Every day there are 40 or so boats heading for coastal cities and Hong Kong. Haikou New Port mainly engages in passenger and car boats between Zhanjiang Port and Haian Port. Xiuying Port operates ships to Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, Haian, Shekou, Beihai and Hong Kong.
Shipping schedules between seaport cities and Haikou:
Guangzhou to Haikou: every Monday, Thursday and Saturday setting sail from Huangpu Old Dock. It takes 18 hours. The minimum price is RMB 128. Zhanjiang to Haikou: one scheduled flight at 21:00 every day. It takes about 8 hours with the minimum price of RMB 43. Shenzhen to Haikou: every Monday to Friday there are ships to Haikou. The minimum price is RMB 113. Beihai to Haikou: one scheduled flight each day with the lowest price of RMB 59. Haian to Haikou: ships operate 24 hours a day at 30-minute interval. The trip takes an hour and a half. The minimum price is RMB 26.
In addition, Xiuying Port has passenger liner to Halong Bay of Viet Nam at 19:00 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It will reach the Halong Bay at 8:00 next morning.

Public Bus and Sightseeing Bus
The public bus charges RMB 1. There are special sightseeing buses connecting main tourist attractions. They are Tourists Bus No. 1 and 2 linking the Wugong Temple and Tropical Ocean World Park. The whole distance costs RMB 2.
Haikou puts New Meilai, the first tourist bus into operation, which passes through several famous scenic spots, the Wugong Temple, Hai Rui Park, Xiuying Emplacement of the downtown area. The bus fare is RMB 1 - 2.
Note: Haikous public buses stop running earlier than elsewhere. And the bus fare rises during the Spring Festival.
Mini Bus: The minibus is the main vehicle of Haikou. Bus fare goes to RMB 1 - 2. If interested in Hainans folk customs, one may choose the pedicab to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way. Alternatively, bicycle rental is a good choice for you.
Taxi RMB 10 is for the first 3 km (1.9 miles) and RMB 1.8 to 2 for every succeeding km. You can bargain with the driver when you take the taxi in Haikou. Generally the taxi fare is RMB 10 in the downtown area.
 Rental Car rental is available. As foreign visitors, you should take your passport, resident certificate, Chinese driving license and credit card and expect to pay RMB 15,000 to 20,000 as a deposit.
Note: There are no toll stations on any part of the highways of Hainan. The toll has been included in the gasoline prices, so the price of gasoline is higher than that of other places.
